Tsubaki oil has been used in Japan since the Edo period. Well know locally as one of the beauty products used by the Geisha, it is now widely used for the skin and hair.
In the world of plant oils for beauty, there are often too many choices and not a single oil fits every condition you are looking for. Certain types may be more beneficial to you than others, depending on your skin and hair types/needs.
Tsubaki oil, also known as camellia oil, is a vitamin and mineral-rich pure plant oil that's cold-pressed from the seeds of the Japanese camellia plant. It is becoming more and more popular and been used as a hydrating, nourishing, and soothing ingredient for the skin and hair. Although "tsubaki oil" and "camellia oil" are often used interchangeably, tsubaki refers specifically to the oil extracted from camellia japonica, so check the inci or ingredient list at all times.
Brimming with antioxidants like vitamins A, D, C, and E, Tsubaki oil is also rich in both Omega 6+9, and thus a very effective emollient that locks in moisture to protect both skin and hair from drying out.
While it is not a dry oil like rosehip, a little goes a long way, and is quickly absorbed and permeates deep into lower layers of skin, promoting cell growth. Although Tsubaki is well tolerated by all skin types, if one were to use Tsubaki oil alone as a facial oil to replace night cream, I would highly recommend it on dry and mature skin.
In terms of hair + scalp benefits, research has found Tsubaki penetrates hair shaft on a deeper level than any other oil. The components of oleic and linoleic acid (Omega 6+9) in hair care products have also shown to have an anti-inflammatory benefit on scalp health and helps the scalp absorb supplementary ingredients faster and more efficiently.
